Battery Backup Disclosure

Heartland Technology’s network requires a continuous power supply at your home or business to provide phone and internet services. During a power outage, these services will not work unless a backup power source, such as a generator or battery, is available.

In the past, corded landline phones operated during outages because they were powered through the phone line. However, with the transition to fiber optic networks, that is no longer the case. Without backup power, your Heartland Technology phone service will be unavailable, meaning you won’t be able to make calls, including 9-1-1, during an outage.

Service Limitation With and Without Backup Power

Backup batteries help keep your voice service connected during a power outage. When used with a standard corded phone, they provide temporary power to allow phone calls, including emergency calls, to be made during an outage. To use your Heartland Technology voice service during power outages, we suggest that you keep a corded phone on hand. Corded phones, unlike cordless phones, do not need a separate power source to operate.

The length of time the battery lasts depends on how often the phone is used while on backup power. Once the battery is drained, phone service will not work until power is restored, and the battery can recharge.

Please note that backup batteries offered by Heartland Technology are designed to support only your voice service. They will not power your internet service or other devices such as Wi-Fi router, home security systems, medical alert equipment, cell phones, or any other powered electronics.

Backup Power Duration

Depending on the model, new backup batteries are designed to provide up to 8 hours of standby time. However, actual performance can vary based on factors such as phone usage during an outage, proper installation and charging, the battery’s age and condition, and how often it has been used. Increased activity on the line, especially repeated incoming or outgoing calls that go unanswered, can cause the battery to drain more quickly. For an 8-hour battery, the estimated talk time is about 2 hours.

Battery Backup Plan

Heartland Technology offers an optional Battery Backup Plan for $4.00/month. The Battery Backup Plan provides relief from service call charges and ensures that you will have backup power for your telephone service in the event of a power outage.

Warranty

If a customer requests the installation of a backup battery, Heartland Technology will replace the battery at no cost once it reaches its end of life, or an operational failure occurs. Customers are responsible for notifying Heartland Technology when this occurs.
