About Heartland Technology

Heartland Technology has been a telecommunication provider to the town of Jesup, Iowa since 1902. After the completion of a 12 million dollar fiber to home project, we expanded our business to utilize the fiber infrastructure and adapt to the the needs of our customers both near and far. We enlisted the help of Schneider Electric to help design and build our newest operation, a Tier III Data Center. Our elite facility was strategically built in the heartland of the Midwest to provide colocation and edge data center services.

Mission Statement: Heartland Technology strives to provide the best customer experience, the highest-quality services in technology, and dedicated support to our community.

The Heartland Difference

When comparing internet providers, below are three key advantages that set us apart – and why customers continue to choose us. As a local, member-owned telecommunications cooperative since 1902, we’re proud to reinvest in the people we serve. Since 1994, we’ve returned $24 million in dividends and $24 million in capital credits to our members; an average of $923,000 per year.

Membership FAQ

Farmers Mutual Telephone Company dba Heartland Technology operates as a telecommunication cooperative. Member-owners are our customers who live within our ILEC (Incumbent Local Exchange Carrier) who have elected to purchase a share. Shareholders may receive capital credits as a benefit of being a member. Capital credits are margins (revenue minus expenses) that are left over at the end of the year that are allocated to members in the form of a credit, a “capital credit”. This allocation is based on the dollar amount of member-eligible services during the same year. Every year, the Board of Directors will vote to retire margins, when our financial condition allows, in patronage back to its members in the form of dividends. We categorize dividends into two different types.

Patronage revenue comes directly from the business we do with our member-owners, essentially the services and products provided to our cooperative customers. When this portion of our business earns a profit, we can choose to allocate those earnings back to our members as patronage allocations. These allocations are a way to share profits based on the amount of business each member does with the cooperative, and they also serve as a tax management tool for the co-op.

Non-patronage revenue comes from areas of our business that are not directly tied to member activity. Examples might include investment income or non-member services. A portion of the profits from these sources are distributed as dividends.

Dividends are not guaranteed and there is no set date or time of the year checks arrive.

Community Involvement

Heartland Technology takes pride in giving back to the communities we serve. Our contributions include but are not limited to financial gifts, in-kind donations and volunteerism. Organizations we give to fall into the following categories: non-profits, community groups, educational groups, veteran organizations, and more.
